The Abia State government has pledged to investigate the alleged destruction of farmlands in Ugwu Akwu Osa and Agbiyi, which belong to the Umuda-Isingwu community in Umuahia North LGA.

The assurance was given on Thursday by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Emmanuel Meribole, while addressing women of the Umuda-Isingwu community who had staged a peaceful protest at the Government House.
Meribole commended the Abia women for pursuing their grievances without resorting to violence and assured them that their complaints would be addressed within a week to achieve an amicable resolution.

He added that the resolution process would involve the Mayor of Umuahia North LGA, Smart Iheoma, the Commissioner for Lands, Chaka Chukwumerije, and the President-General of the Umuda-Isingwu community.
Leading the protest, Mrs. Nkechi Nnodimele highlighted the activities of alleged land grabbers who encroach on and destroy farmlands belonging to the community. She warned that such unauthorized destruction could worsen hunger and leave future generations without land for farming or settlement.
Mrs. Nnodimele emphasized that the community supports Governor Alex Otti’s administration and appealed to the state government to quell tensions by identifying and restraining individuals involved in the alleged land grabbing and crop destruction.
The protesters later proceeded to the Umuahia North LGA headquarters Abia to formally register their complaints.
