On Monday November 17, Taraba State saw one of its most significant political upheavals as a wave of resignations swept through the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), essentially emptying the party’s structure throughout the state.

Early in the day, party offices, council secretariats, and government buildings in Jalingo were inundated with resignation letters, which seemed to indicate a planned defection to the ruling All Progressives Congress, or APC.

By noon, it was clear that the PDP, which had previously been the state’s leading political force, had lost almost all of its important supporters.

According to reports, the Taraba State House of Assembly dealt the first significant blow when all sixteen PDP lawmakers abruptly announced their resignations from the party.

By the afternoon, the chairmen of all sixteen local government councils, under the leadership of Dr. Aminu Jauro Hassan, the state chairman of ALGON, had also released a united statement affirming their intention to abandon the PDP.

The chairmen stated that their action was intended to support Governor Agbu Kefas, who is anticipated to formally join the APC on Wednesday.

“Our decision is aimed at aligning fully with the governor’s political direction and strengthening support for his Moving Forward Agenda,” the statement read.

Alhaji Bawa Abubakar, the PDP’s state chairman, and the entire state executive committee submitted their resignations in a severe blow to the party.

Many political have interpreted this as the party’s complete demise in the state.

As commissioners, advisers, and senior government officials—many of whom had been appointed under the PDP—announced their allegiance to the APC, the exodus continued into the evening.

The State Executive Council as a whole has joined the national ruling party, according to a statement released by Barrister Zainabu Usman Jalingo, Commissioner for Information and Re-Orientation.

According to certain commissioners who spoke with news correspondent, the national PDP’s leadership issues and unresolved conflicts were the reasons behind their choices.

Remaining in the party “would only end up frustrating our political dreams,” according to a senior official who asked to remain anonymous.

The mass defection comes just days before Governor Kefas is expected to make his formal announcement, a development that political observers described as one of the most sweeping realignments since the creation of Taraba State.

The governor is set to join the APC with a completely intact political apparatus if he moves forward as planned on Wednesday, which could drastically alter the political landscape of the state.
