Prof. Joash Amupitan, the next chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, is anticipated to take office next week, ahead of the governorship election in Anambra State on November 8.
Information gathered revealed that Amupitan would formally assume leadership of the commission following his swearing-in by President Bola Tinubu, which is customarily done at the Federal Executive Council meeting, which is scheduled for next week.
“Prof. Amupitan will assume office on the day he is sworn in by the President.
“The tradition is that he gets sworn in before a Federal Executive Council meeting, and he would be escorted by INEC National Commissioners to resume office immediately,” a senior official involved in the transition process said.
Although the precise date is yet unknown, an INEC Director affirmed that the swearing-in is almost here.
The commission’s activities also indicated that the new Inec Chairman’s entry is being planned.
Recall that last Thursday, the Senate approved Amupitan, a 58-year-old Nigerian senior advocate and professor of law at the University of Jos, as INEC Chairman following a voice vote headed by Senate President Godswill Akpabio.
