The decision by APC was reached on Friday at the party’s 8th National Convention and was ratified by delegates, the convention being the party’s highest decision-making body.

Senator Barau Jibrin, representing Kano North, who moved the motion, explained that the tenure of the caretaker committees at the ward, local government, and state levels was originally set to expire at the end of March 2026.

However, he noted that prevailing political circumstances have made it difficult to conduct fresh congresses at this time.

According to him, the extension will help maintain administrative stability and enable the party to effectively coordinate preparations for upcoming congresses and future elections in the affected states.

He emphasized that the move is necessary to ensure proper coordination, consolidation, and readiness for the conduct of congresses.

The motion was seconded by Senate Leader, Senator Opeyemi Bamidele, and received unanimous approval from delegates.

In a related development, the convention also dissolved the National Working Committee (NWC) to allow for the emergence of new national officers.

The motion for the dissolution was moved by the party’s National Legal Adviser, Abdulkarim Kana, who cited provisions of the APC constitution, and was seconded by the Deputy National Secretary, Prof. Abdulkarim Oluopolekana.

Similarly, Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, moved a motion for the adoption of consensus as the method for electing new national officers, noting that it would ensure an orderly process that reflects the collective will of party members.

The motion was seconded by Kaduna State Governor and Vice-Chairman of the Progressive Governors’ Forum, Senator Uba Sani.

Also, Senate President Godswill Akpabio moved a motion for the formal adoption and ratification of ward, local government, state, and zonal congresses conducted nationwide, stating that they were carried out in line with the Electoral Act and party guidelines, thereby strengthening the party’s grassroots structure.

The motion was seconded by the Chairman of the Progressive Governors’ Forum and Governor of Imo State, Hope Uzodimma.

All motions presented during the APC convention were unanimously adopted by delegates.
