The Coalition of United Political Parties (CUPP), has affirmed that the ruling party’s success in the 2027 general elections is not guaranteed by the massive defection of some governors and opposition personalities to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

In response to the recent surge of opposition party defections into the APC, CUPP Secretary-General Peter Ameh made this announcement on Thursday in Abuja.

“Nigerians hold the ultimate authority to decide who governs them. No defection can guarantee political survival for any leader who has lost touch with the people,” he said.

Ameh went on to say that the country’s political growth saw a sea change in the 2023 general elections, with voters increasingly selecting candidates based on their moral convictions rather than their party allegiance.

He described the victory of independent-minded candidates over well-established politicians as proof that voters are becoming more conscious and aggressive.

According to him, “voters in Enugu and Bayelsa are politically sophisticated and guided by performance, not propaganda. No amount of external influence or federal backing can override the will of the people.”
