The Academic Staff Union of Universities(ASUU) has threatened to shut down public universities across the country if the Federal Government of Nigeria does not immediately apply the recently approved compensation structure for university professors.
The union’s president, Christopher Piwuna, issued a four-day ultimatum on Thursday, threatening to take serious action if nothing is done by the deadline.
Speaking at Sa’adu Zungur University in Bauchi State, Piwuna stated that the government needs to start paying under the new salary arrangement right away.
“We have issued a four-day ultimatum from today to the federal government to commence payment of the newly approved salary structure. Failure to comply will attract a strong response from the union,” he said.
Lecturers at the University of Lagos recently worsened the situation by going on an indefinite strike for unpaid salary, which was later suspended following talks with the institution’s administration.
ASUU claims that practical issues, like as the sluggish approval of the 2026 national budget, are to blame for the delay in putting the new pay structure into effect.
With the ultimatum now in effect, pressure is mounting on the government to act quickly and avert another disruption to academic activities across the country’s public universities.
