Leaders of opposition political parties in Nigeria including Atiku have kicked against the amended Electoral Act 2026 recently assented to by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and other prominent party leaders were among the opposition politicians who lambasted the National Assembly’s legislative process, calling it defective.

Ajuri Ahmed of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) claimed during a press briefing that the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) is planning to make President Tinubu the only viable candidate for president in the run-up to the general elections in 2027.
He questioned the justification for keeping a manual transmission clause in the new law, arguing that the data they have access to shows that results can be electronically transferred from every polling station in the country.

Ahmed added that he was shocked by how quickly the President signed the law, pointing out that other pieces of legislation did not exhibit the same level of haste.
He said the recent Federal Capital Territory (FCT) election serves as evidence of why the APC rushed to have the Electoral Act signed.

The alliance of opposition leaders also disregarded the results of the FCT Area Council election, claiming that the new Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Chairman failed a critical test.
