Dozens feared dead, injured as billboard collapses on tricycles in Abia

A massive still billboard collapsed on some tricycles carrying passengers in Aba, Abia State, on Wednesday resulting in several casualties, injuries to many passengers, with many others feared dead.

The incident occurred in the afternoon during a downpour accompanied by high winds at the Salad Market intersection close to the GIA Event Centre.

According to a an eye witness who saw the incident, some tricycles carrying people were crushed beneath the large billboard, killing some of the passengers there as the survivors moaned and screamed for assistance.

An eye witness who managed to record the incident shared the video on social media. In the widely circulated clip, the lady was heard lamenting over the billboard incident adding that a lot of people were trapped inside the tricycles while several others may be dead already.

No official confirmation has been made by concerned authorities regarding the tragedy or the real number of casualties at the time of reporting this article, but engineers and other sympathizing inhabitants of Aba who arrived at the spot took out the victims from under the billboard.

According to information obtained by our correspondent, the deceased passengers were transported to the mortuary, while the injured passengers were transferred to the hospital for immediate medical attention.
