A senior officer and Commanding Officer in the Nigerian Army, Lieutenant Colonel Umar Farouq, has been identified as one of those killed by Boko Haram during a fresh attack on a military base in Borno State.

SaharaReporters had previously described how terrorists from the Boko Haram branch supported by the Islamic State launched a well-planned attack on a military camp in Kukuwa town on Sunday.

According to sources, the terrorists drove away ammunition, set cars on fire, and drove the military out of the facility.

They then attacked the community’s inhabitants in the state’s Kukawa Local Government Area. Giving an update on Monday afternoon, a source identified Lieutenant Colonel Farouq as one of the casualties.

“The commanding officer here, Lieutenant Colonel Umar Farouq, and some of his troops have been confirmed dead already, so sad,” the source said.

This tragedy occurred less than 72 hours after Lieutenant Colonel SI Iliyasu, another senior officer, was assassinated by Boko Haram rebels.

The terrorists assassinated Iliyasu, the 222 Battalion’s commanding officer, and a few of his soldiers in Konduga, Borno State.

The rebels have begun targeting soldiers in recent months.

The terrorists simultaneously assaulted four attacked bases in Konduga, Mainok, Jakana, and Marte town in Borno State between 10 p.m. and 3 a.m. on Thursday.

They allegedly occasionally opened fire on the military installations, resulting in many casualties.

Additionally, the gunmen arrived in various groups. According to reports, the gunmen stole unquantifiable ammo and set fire to military vehicles and armoured tanks during the attacks.

One of the sources claims that while the military repelled the attacks, some Boko Haram terrorists were also killed.
