The Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) has formally clarified that the National Identification Number (NIN) issued by the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) now automatically serves as the Tax ID Number (TIN) for individual Nigerians.

The FIRS released the statement on X on Monday as part of a public awareness campaign on the new tax laws.

Additionally, registered businesses will no longer require a distinct Tax ID, according to the Service. Instead, under the new system, their official tax identity will be their Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) registration number.

The clarification comes amid public concerns over provisions in the new tax laws requiring a Tax identification for certain transactions, including bank account ownership.

The Nigeria Tax Administration Act (NTAA), which will go into effect in January 2026, requires the usage of a Tax number for certain transactions, according to the FIRS.

The Service underlined that this obligation is not new, pointing out that it has been in place since the Finance Act of 2019 and has recently been strengthened by the NTAA.

NIN now to serve as TIN

“The Tax ID unifies all Tax Identification Numbers previously issued by the FIRS and State Internal Revenue Services into a single identifier,” the Service said.

“For individuals, your NIN automatically serves as your Tax ID, while for registered companies, your CAC RC number is used. You do not need a physical card, as the Tax ID is a unique number linked directly to your identity.”

According to the FIRS, the new system will make it easier to identify taxpayers, get rid of duplication, stop tax fraud, and guarantee equity by ensuring that everyone with taxable income pays their fair amount.

Assuring Nigerians that the revised tax framework is meant to improve efficiency and transparency in tax administration, the Service also asked the public to disregard any false information regarding the change.
