Anambra Road Horror: Taskforce Crash Claims Four Lives

Four individuals have reportedly died in an accident involving the vehicle of the Anambra State Special Anti-Tout Squad, a sand-filled tipper truck, and another vehicle.

The incident, which featured three vehicles including a private Toyota Hummer bus with registration number UWN763XA, a government-owned Toyota Hummer bus without a registration number, and a Mercedes Benz tipper, took place along the Onitsha-Owerri Road near New Road Junction in Oba on Friday.

According to reports, the driver of the taskforce vehicle crashed into the tipper while exiting a junction during a routine stop-and-search operation.

One witness, who only identified herself as Chinwe and resides in the area, stated, “The branded Toyota vehicle was carrying about eight young men and was speeding when it collided with the fully loaded sand tipper.

“The operatives were conducting their usual stop and search when they struck the tipper that was emerging from another road junction.

“Following the crash, the passengers in the vehicle were trapped, and bystanders were the ones extracting their bodies. Four dead bodies were retrieved, and those injured were taken to the hospital.

A circulating video showed the crash scene with bodies on the road while bystanders helped the injured individuals.

Margaret Onabe, the Sector Public Education Officer for the Federal Road Safety Corps in Anambra State, confirmed the accident, attributing it to a violation of traffic rules.

Onabe stated, “Five adult males were involved in the accident. Four males lost their lives, and one sustained injuries.

“The rescue operation was executed by personnel from the Anambra State Anti-Tout Squad. The wrecked vehicles have been removed from the roadway, facilitating a smooth traffic flow.

“It is crucial to mention that the FRSC rescue team faced delays in carrying out their duties due to an altercation with local youths from the Oba community, who claimed that the crash was caused by certain individuals and demanded their representatives before any rescue efforts could proceed. The team had to depart but returned once police and other armed forces arrived.
