FormerLabour Party candidate and ADC chieftain, Peter Obi has announced his resignation from the African Democratic Congress (ADC), citing a worsening political climate marked by internal crises, external interference, and growing hostility within party structures.
In a thoughtful statement released on Sunday, Peter Obi characterised Nigeria’s political environment as becoming more and more poisonous, with constant monitoring, intimidation, and insecurity becoming commonplace.
He bemoaned the fact that institutions designed to safeguard citizens increasingly frequently operate against them and that those who aspire to genuine service are under increasing pressure in both public and private spheres.
Additionally, he stressed that his focus is still on the wellbeing of the country rather than positions and stated that he is not personally desperate for political office.
He said, “I am not desperate to be President, Vice President or Senate President. I am desperate to see a Nigeria where people can live in dignity, without hunger, fear, or displacement.”
Obi also criticised a larger cultural tendency in which honesty, modesty, and respect for due procedure are frequently mistaken for weakness.
Peter Obi also reiterated his dedication to Nigeria’s development in spite of his departure, stressing that the welfare of its citizens—especially those facing poverty, relocation, and insecurity—remains his top priority.
He further emphasised that his desire to create a society that is just, compassionate, and functional is what motivates him rather than the urge to run for political office.
