Manchester United’s captain, Bruno Fernandes, has been named the 2026 PFA Players’ Player of the Year. Bruno beat five other nominees to claim the prestigious honor as his fellow professionals voted him the best player of the 2025/26 season.
The award was presented at the 53rd annual PFA Awards ceremony that took place at the Manchester Opera House on Tuesday evening. Fernandes walked onto the stage to a standing ovation for his award. He had already won the Football Writers’ Association Footballer of the Year award and collected the Premier League’s Player of the Season.
The PFA award completed a clean sweep of individual honors.
The Portuguese midfielder enjoyed a record-breaking campaign, providing 21 assists in the Premier League. That is the most assists ever recorded in a single season. But not just that, he also scored crucial goals that led United to a third-place finish, which took them back to the Champions League stage.
Without him, many experts suggest the season for Manchester United would have looked very different.
Fernandes beat some serious competition, such as Erling Haaland from Manchester City, who won the Golden Boot with 27 goals in 35 games. Haaland’s teammate Rayan Cherki also featured on the list, as the Frenchman impressed in his debut season for the former Premier League champions.
Arsenal also had three nominees: Declan Rice, David Raya, and Gabriel Magalhaes, who all made the cut. They helped the Gunners win the title, but even their collective brilliance could not stop Fernandes. The players voted for the man who made the biggest difference week in, week out.
Fernandes has now established himself as one of United’s most influential players. He joined from Sporting Lisbon in January 2020 for a cost of 47 million pounds. At the time, many questioned the fee, but he has repaid it tenfold to become the heartbeat of the team. He dictates tempo, creates chances, and scores goals.
Michael Carrick, his manager, has praised him repeatedly and calls Fernandes the standard-setter. He says the Portuguese demand more from him than anyone else. That attitude rubs off on teammates as young players look up to him and veterans respect him.
The award caps a remarkable turnaround for Fernandes.
In previous seasons, critics questioned his consistency on the pitch, as they said he disappeared in big games. They said he took too many risks when pushing the ball forward, and he answered them all, as his 21 assists came against top-six opposition. His goals came when United needed them most, and he carried the team through injuries and slumps.
The timing of the award is interesting, as United lost their opening game of the new season. Hull City beat them 2-0 on Saturday. Carrick’s side looked flat, and Fernandes could not influence the game. Some critics are already sharpening their knives, hinting that last season might be a fluke. And equally, saying Fernandes cannot sustain his form.
United have not won the Premier League since 2013. Fernandes wants to end that drought by adding a league title to his growing collection of individual honors.
