According to a post on X by security analyst Zagazola Makama, Buratai, during a recent appearance on Channels Television, advocated for a “whole-of-society approach” to tackling insecurity. He stressed that addressing threats from groups like Boko Haram requires the involvement of all sectors, not just the armed forces.

Buratai noted that while troops have remained active across various conflict zones, their efforts must be complemented by effective governance, economic development, and social interventions from other institutions and stakeholders. He emphasized that the country has become overly reliant on the military, despite the roles assigned to different agencies and levels of government.

He also referenced Nigeria’s National Security Strategy 2019, which outlines a comprehensive framework incorporating economic, social, and infrastructural solutions, but questioned its consistent implementation.

The former army chief highlighted that resolving insecurity goes beyond combat, pointing to issues such as poverty, unemployment, and poor infrastructure as major drivers of unrest. He explained that bad road conditions in conflict areas hinder military operations, delay troop movement, and expose personnel to ambushes and explosives.
