Kanuri and Fulani lead in Nigeria’s out-of-school children list, says UNICEF.
UNICEF reports that the Kanuri, Fulani, and Hausa ethnicities bear the brunt of Nigeria’s out-of-school children crisis. The North West, North East, and North Central regions are particularly affected, with millions of children out of school. Notably, the Kanuri ethnic group, despite its smaller population, has a disproportionately high number of out-of-school children. UNICEF expresses concern over Nigeria’s staggering 18.3 million out-of-school children, the highest globally, with challenges including inadequate policy, budget, teacher shortages, infrastructure deficits, and cultural norms hindering access to education. The education system’s struggle to retain and ensure continued education, especially in the North-East and North-West, underscores the urgent need for comprehensive interventions to address the crisis.
