Banks to charge N6 Per sms starting May 1st 2025
Beginning Thursday, May 1, 2025, bank customers in Nigeria will have to pay a sum of N6 for all SMS transaction alerts due to the recent increase in telecommunications service rates approved by the federal government.
This new transaction alert fee means that bank customers will now pay N6 per SMS transaction alert from the initial N4 per message, and this has already been communicated to several commercial banks in preparation for the rollout of this new initiative.

Guaranty Trust Bank Limited was among those that issued notices. An email is sent to customers titled “Increase in SMS Transaction Alert Fee” by the bank, which explains the cause of the change as higher bills from telecommunications providers.
“Dear Valued Customer, Please be informed that effective Thursday, May 1, 2025, the SMS transaction alert fee will increase from N4 to N6 per message.
This adjustment is due to a recent increase in telecom rates as communicated by the telecommunication service providers,” the notice read.

The very awash with importance of SMS alerts in this regard:
It is as good as that statement-which-his-monitors-in-moving-directions of the customer account activity. Charges shall apply for SMS alerts sent to an international phone number.

The increase in telecom rates would also moderate the parallel increase in the fees imposed on SMS alerts at the same time with all these happenings in the nation that qualify as other issues that are associated with the creeping costs of livelihood and digital access.
