Benue Pays Price: Bandits Demand N20M Monthly Taxes”
In Ukum Local Government Area of Benue State, armed bandits have reportedly started imposing taxes and levies on residents of Torough and nearby communities, demanding N20 million as a monthly tax from each household. Residents, including village heads, are complying out of fear for their safety, with each household paying N50,000, and larger compounds paying up to N1 million.
The bandit leader, known as ‘Full Fire,’ is behind these extortion demands. He has a history of collaborating with armed herdsmen and has been terrorizing the area for the past five years. The local government and security forces are aware of the situation and are working to address it. The Special Adviser to the Governor on Internal Security, Joseph Har, stated that bandits are on the run and facing increased pressure from security operations. However, the Police Command has not yet received any reports of this development.
