Economic Shock: Most Nigerian Students Settle In The UK
A most recent report by the UK office for National Statistics is raising concerns over the increasing number of Nigerian Students, wanting to remain in the country after completing thier studies.
Thier data revealed that 76% of Nigerians who entered the Uk ON STUDY-ROUTE visas during the year ending June 2021, transitioned to a non study visa within three years, a significant rise from 24% in 2019. Most experts now say this could cause a severe economic consequence for Nigeria.
TALENT LOSS AND BRAIN DRAIN
HR expert Akintobi Kehinde, said the growing number of Nigerians schooling abroad and remaining there is a clear indication of an escalating drain. He and we quote
“As talented individuals leave, they take with them critical skills that are essential to the development of the Nigerian economy,” Akintobi stated.
Skill labour migration is a leading issue, Akintobi calls for a “capacity gap” to ensure vital sector growt hand an increase in human capacity. He also explained that many Nigerian business seriously struggling to fill vacant positions in these fields.
“The loss of talent means the country faces a shortage of skilled professionals, which further hampers economic progress,” he said.
