The Federal Government and FAAN have closed down the Ibadan Airport for the upgrade of its facilities to international standards.
The Samuel Ladoke Akintola Airport in Ibadan, Oyo State, has been closed temporarily for an upgrade by the Federal Government and the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN).
Obiageli Orah, FAAN’s Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, announced this in a statement on Sunday.

Orah said the airport was temporarily closed to speed up the extensive upgrade of the transport facility to infrastructure and operational standards. She also stated that the airport upgrade was necessary for certain critical improvements.
The statement reads, “The Federal Government of Nigeria has approved the temporary closure of Samuel Ladoke Akintola Airport (SLAA), Ibadan, due to ongoing upgrade works.
As part of the Oyo State Government’s initiative to upgrade Ibadan Airport from a domestic to an international airport, various improvements and remodeling works are currently underway.”
Part of the statement also states that the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA), in accordance with the International Civil Aviation Organization regulations, has shut off the Ibadan airport runway and suspended its operations.
It further stated that this upgrade is a testament to the state government’s unwavering commitment to raise the airport to international status.
In conclusion to the statement, “In compliance with aviation safety recommended standards and processes, the closure became imperative to ensure the safety of passengers as well as airport personnel.”

The Airport agency is currently being led by Mrs. Olubunmi Kuku, who is the current Managing Director/Chief Executive (MD/CEO) and the first female to hold the position.
