Flood: Fuel scarcity looms in Abuja, Northern Nigeria, PETROAN, IPMAN react

There is looming fuel scarcity as the most devastating flood has swept hundreds of persons and brought down the bridge in Mokwa, Niger State, connecting Northern Nigeria with the southwestern part of the country.

Vehicle and pedestrian traffic around the Mokwa Bridge has been hampered by the bridge collapse last Wednesday, and trucks carrying petroleum products are not exempt.

Community members had proposed a larger death toll, however the Niger State Emergency Management Agency and the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) claimed 153, while the number from the Mokwa, Niger, flood was still up for debate.

Senior officials at the MRS and Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited filling stations in Abuja discussed the impact of the bridge collapse, implying that there might be a shortage of petroleum products during the 2025 Eid al-Adha (Sallah) celebration and the June 6–9 holidays.

Distribution might be affected by the development, an MRS official who wished to remain anonymous informed news men.

However, he made sure that during the Sallah holiday, the price of gasoline will stay at N895 per litre.

“Most of the petrol trucks are stranded due to the Mokwa Niger State bridge collapse.

“Honestly, I foresee fuel scarcity in Abuja and some parts of Northern Nigeria.

“I hope the government fixes the bridge on time, as our trucks had already made a u-turn, which is more expensive and time-consuming,” he said.

The official at MRS was supported by another source at NNPCL, who pointed out that if sufficient supply does not come from alternative routes like Port Harcourt and Warri, the development could result in a fuel shortage.

In response to the news, James Tor, the National Secretary of the Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria, and Billy Gillis-Harry, the National President of the Petroleum Products Retail Outlet Owners Association, provided news men with rather different viewpoints.

Gillis-Harry promised that its members would make sure there was a sufficient supply of petrol coming from alternate sources and routes in Rivers, Delta and Port Harcourt States to Abuja and throughout Nigeria.
