“Nigeria on Alert: 11 States Brace for Flood Risk from Lagdo Dam”

Through the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA), the Nigerian government has issued a warning to 11 states as Cameroon begins releasing water from the Lagdo Dam. Starting September 17, water will be released at 100m³/s and could rise to 1000m³/s over the next week, depending on upstream inflows. Although NIHSA assures that current river Benue levels remain manageable, states like Adamawa, Taraba, and Benue, which are near the river, have been urged to prepare for potential flooding.

The government is monitoring water levels and coordinating efforts to prevent a repeat of the 2022 disaster, which claimed over 600 lives. Emergency preparedness is being ramped up at federal, state, and local levels.
