Nigerian Passport Renewal to Go Digital by 2025

Nigerians will soon experience a major transformation in passport processing as the federal government plans to allow citizens to obtain passports from the comfort of their homes. This groundbreaking initiative was announced by the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, at a stakeholders’ forum in Abuja.

According to the minister, the new contactless passport processing system will enable Nigerians to process and receive their passports without needing to visit passport offices. The initiative is part of a broader effort to simplify the passport issuance process, eliminate unnecessary delays, and curb exploitation by middlemen.

Who Will Benefit First?

The new system will initially be available only to Nigerians aged 18 and above who are seeking to renew their expired passports. These individuals will be able to complete the entire process using a dedicated app from their homes. However, fresh passport applicants will still need to visit passport processing centers to submit their biometric information in person. This measure is designed to maintain the security and integrity of the process for new applicants.

Dr. Tunji-Ojo emphasized that the contactless passport processing system is a collaboration between two Nigerian firms, Irish Smart Technology and New World. These companies have been testing the system for the last nine months to ensure its effectiveness. The app will cover every step of the passport renewal process, ensuring that applicants have a seamless experience without the need for physical appointments.

Reducing Exploitation and Delays

One of the primary goals of the initiative is to reduce the opportunities for exploitation by middlemen who often create unnecessary hurdles in the passport application process. By enabling Nigerians to handle renewals through an app, the government aims to cut down on corruption and speed up the process, making it more convenient for citizens both at home and abroad.

In his address, Dr. Tunji-Ojo acknowledged the frustration that many Nigerians face when trying to obtain or renew their passports. Long delays, high costs, and middlemen have made the process unnecessarily difficult for years. The minister reassured Nigerians that the new system will significantly ease these challenges.

Centralized Passport Issuance From April 2025

In addition to the introduction of the contactless system, Dr. Tunji-Ojo announced that from April 2025, passport production will be fully centralized in Abuja. This means that immigration attachés stationed in Nigerian embassies abroad will no longer have the authority to issue passports. This move aims to streamline the process, improve oversight, and reduce cases of mismanagement in foreign missions.

The centralized system will ensure that all passports are produced under the same strict guidelines, helping to improve efficiency and reduce the risk of errors or delays. This development is expected to have a positive impact on Nigerians living abroad who often face significant challenges in renewing their passports through embassies.

Boosting National Security and Efficiency

To further strengthen national security and improve the operations of the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), the government has approved the retention of 50% of the NIS’s internally generated revenue. According to Dr. Tunji-Ojo, this decision will enable the service to improve its facilities, reduce processing times, and invest in better technology.

Additionally, the government is constructing 32 forward operational bases across the country to support the NIS in carrying out its duties effectively. These bases will enhance border security and improve the overall efficiency of the agency.

Enhancing Passport Security

Mrs. Kemi Nandap, the Comptroller-General of the NIS, expressed her optimism about the contactless passport processing system. She stated that the new system would not only make it easier for Nigerians to renew their passports but also enhance the security features of Nigerian passports. The new technology is in line with international standards and will ensure that Nigerian passports are among the most secure in the world.
