Nigerians are paying less than other African countries for electricity – TCN

According to The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), Nigerians ought to include low cost of electricity to their list of blessings. The TCN claims that despite the hike in electricity cost, Nigeria still has it better than other African  countries.

Sule Abdulaziz, the managing director, said this on Channels Television during the Sunday Politics programme.

Abdulaziz explained that power production is expensive. He also mentioned the exchange rate as one of the reasons for the hike. Despite these factors, Abdulaziz reiterated that cost of electricity is higher in other African countries like Senegal, Burkina Faso, and Niger.

“Electricity is now expensive in Nigeria, we are feeling it is expensive because we are getting it at a cheaper price. If you go to other African countries… still, now, Nigeria is cheaper,” Abdulaziz stated.

 He went further to say that some Nigerians, especially those in the Band A category, now enjoy almost 24/7 electricity. “Nigerians are getting 24 hours supply (daily), it’s not everybody but those people on Band A, they get 20 to 22 hours,” he said.

 Abdulaziz assured Nigerians that stable electricity is possible in the nearest future. Ti buttress this, he highlighted the improvements in electricity supply over the past year.If you ask Nigerians, all of them know that there is improvement in power and this improvement is going to continue,” he said.

The electricity tariff went from N66 to N225 per kilowatt-hour on April 3rd 2024. The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) claimed that the increase is to better serve Nigerians, as  Nigerians on band A get at least 20 hours of electricity daily.

How do Nigerians feel about this?

The following are the opinions of some Nigerians concerning Abdulaziz’ statements.

@IMKalachiwi

Some? while countries we supply electricity to are getting 24 hrs supply. Nice.

@mkadamu3

This is obvious in Nigeria. I can personally attest to this from my own experience in Band A, specifically.

@Zhewi
