Nigerians complain about “petrol situation”
The petrol situation in the country has become a thorn in every Nigerian’s flesh. The cost of transportation is now at an all time high. Prices are over five times what they used to be last year. Moving from one place to another has become an equation that require intense calculation.
In the same way, many Nigerians with private cars are struggling to maintain their cars. With the long hours of queue and cost of fuel, many civil and public servants have resorted to staff buses. Private employees on the other hand have started taking commercial vehicles.
Nigerians lament that not only is petrol expensive, it is also scarce. Many vehicle owners spend up to thirty minutes queueing at the petrol station. And these queues are usually not orderly or peaceful, as everyone is frustrated and in a hurry.
A liter of petrol that used to be N195 in 2023 is now N1,200 with nothing tangible to show for it. Some drivers even say that the quality of the petrol has reduced, claiming that it doesn’t last for as long as it used to.
These petrol queues have also become a spontaneous therapy and bonding sessions for Nigerians. Here, they trade stories, talk about other countries who seemingly have it better, encourage one another, and pray that it will be well.
When President Bola Ahmed Tinubu assumed office, removing the fuel subsidy
was one of the first things he did. It was almost as though he had it all planned out beforehand.
He promised that it was done in the best interest of Nigerians, that if Nigerians will endure, they will reap the rewards.
Nigerians have been enduring this hardship but no benefit or reward has been forthcoming. But with no choice but to trust President Tinubu, Nigerians keep believing that eventually, all will indeed be well.
