Nationwide strike Lums(NLC)

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has instructed its members and affiliate unions to mobilize for a two-day nationwide protest on February 27 and 28 if the federal government doesn’t fulfill the agreements signed in October 2023.

The two-day nationwide protest, as outlined in the communique signed by NLC President Comrade Joe Ajaero and Acting General Secretary Comrade Ismail Bello, is scheduled to occur following the expiration of the 14-day ultimatum previously issued by the organization.

Comrade Ajaero of the NLC, addressing newsmen at the end of the union’s National Executive Council (NEC) meeting in Abuja, instructed his members to standby for an indefinite strike. This strike would commence seven days after the nationwide protest if the government still fails to meet its demands.

Ajaero stated that Labour no longer has interest in empty talks.

Ajaero emphasized that Labor seeks action, not mere government dialogue, urging immediate implementation of agreements to restore faith in democracy as Nigerians face survival challenges.

A communique read by the Congress President at the end of the meeting noted that on Monday,  29th May 2023, President Bola Tinubu announced during his inaugural speech the withdrawal of Subsidy on Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) in Nigeria.

That singular pronouncement immediately caused the price of the product, central to transportation and power in Nigeria, to escalate nationwide. This threw the nation into turmoil and confusion, leaving citizens stranded and increasing suffering, hardship, and angst among the populace.

October 2 Agreement!

“We held a series of meetings with the federal government, ultimately resulting in the signing of an Agreement, now referred to as the October 2 Agreement.” This Agreement contained several safeguards which we had believed if implemented conscientiously would have gone a long way to ameliorate the suffering and hardship that the ill-conceived and ill-implemented policies of the government have foisted on the masses and workers.

“The NEC-in-session considered the unfortunate state of our nation; the huge suffering pervading the nation, the general crisis of living, the outrage expressed by the majority, and the increased attendant fears of the continued consequences of these Policies and the persistent refusal of the Government to implement the tenets of the October Agreement.
