Chinese national arrested in Lagos

Chinese National Arrested in Lagos Over Alleged Sexual Assault of Nigerian Employee

The Lagos State Police Command has detained a Chinese national, Bai Quang, following allegations that he sexually assaulted and repeatedly made unwanted advances towards his Nigerian employee, identified as Charles Nwafor.

Quang was reportedly arrested after Nwafor petitioned the police, alleging that his employer repeatedly made sexual advances towards him despite his refusal and later assaulted him after he rejected the alleged advances.

A police source said one of the alleged incidents involved Quang reportedly pulling down Nwafor’s trousers and touching his private parts, among other alleged acts.

The source further alleged that Quang later invited Nwafor to a hotel under the pretext of discussing a business transaction, where he allegedly attempted to force him into unwanted sexual activity.

According to the source, Nwafor had repeatedly rejected the alleged advances and made it clear that he did not consent to the actions.

The alleged encounter at the hotel reportedly did not succeed, after which Nwafor approached the police and formally reported the matter.

The source also alleged that Quang threatened Nwafor and subsequently terminated his employment after the complainant refused to comply with his alleged demands.

Following the petition, the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Fatai Tijani, reportedly ordered the transfer of the case from the Hausa Police Station to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Yaba, for further investigation.

The case is being investigated by the Diplomatic/Foreign Nationals Section of the SCID under the supervision of the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the department, Dayo Akinbisehin.

The Chinese Embassy is also expected to be notified of Quang’s arrest and detention in line with established procedures for cases involving foreign nationals.

The police source said investigators were working to establish the circumstances surrounding the allegations and determine the appropriate legal action based on their findings.

“The suspect is in safe custody while investigation is ongoing,” the source said.

The development comes amid the recent restructuring of the Lagos State SCID into specialised units and sections designed to strengthen the command’s capacity to investigate emerging and specialised crimes.

As part of the restructuring, the Diplomatic/Foreign Nationals Crimes Section was established to handle criminal cases involving non-Nigerians in Lagos and improve coordination between the police and foreign diplomatic missions.

The police said investigations into the allegations against Quang remain ongoing.
