The Supreme Court on Friday dismissed an appeal by Aminu Sule Lamido, son of former Jigawa State Governor Sule Lamido, challenging the forfeiture of $40,000 to the Federal Government.

The rulings of the lower courts were upheld when a five-member panel of the Supreme Court, presided over by Justice Inyang Okoro, decided that the appeal lacked substance.

The court said that the appeal was “doomed to fail” and formally upheld the forfeiture of the cash to the Federal Government in a unanimous ruling read by Justice Abubakar Sadiq Umar and delivered by Justice Adamu Jauro.

Lamido’s son

On February 4, 2013, he was charged with one count of fraudulent disclosure of foreign currency under the Money Laundering (Prohibition) Act and associated statutes at the Federal High Court in Kano.

On July 12, 2015, the trial court found him guilty and mandated that the Federal Government get a quarter of the unreported money. On December 7, 2015, the Kaduna Court of Appeal affirmed that ruling.

Aminu Lamido, dissatisfied, filed an appeal with the Supreme Court in an attempt to overturn the lower courts’ rulings. Following the adoption of written briefs by both sides’ solicitors at the most recent session, the Supreme Court postponed making a decision.

In Friday’s ruling, the Supreme Court held that the appeal lacked merit on all grounds, leaving intact the forfeiture order.
