Fire Incident as Mother and Her 18 months Son Die in Abuja

A tragedy occurred in the Kugbo furniture market area in the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC), Federal Capital Territory. A midnight fire was said to have killed a 24-year-old mother and her 18-month-old son. 

The woman was identified as Jumai Sunday and her 18-month-old son, Nasir Rabiu.

Several eyewitnesses who were present as the firefighters controlled the fire from escalating said Jumai and her son were in a deep sleep when the fire started and were killed.

According to them, the bodies were discovered by neighbors and sympathisers in their efforts to rearrange the properties after firefighters had finished controlling the situation.

Lakur Langyi, the FCT Police officer in charge of Karu Division, said distress calls were placed to his station about the incident, and as soon as his men got there, the woman and her son were burnt to death.

Langyi said, “Yes, there was a fire incident in Kugbo at a place called Bakasi, my men got distress calls at midnight Wednesday and moved to the area, they discovered a woman, identified as Jumai Sunday with her one-and-a-half-year-old boy burnt to death.

“My men have since commenced an investigation into the matter, they are currently in the area.”

The cause is yet to be ascertained, as investigations are currently ongoing.

Jumai Sunday was from Nasarawa Eggon Local Government Area of Nasarawa State. She and her son have since been buried in Kugbo cemetery off Abuja-Nyanya -Keffi Expressway.
