Simon Ekpa will be extradited to Nigeria for trial – DSS tells court.

Federal High Court sitting in Abuja was told that soon Simon Ekpa, who is an associate of the detained leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) Nnamdi Kanu, will be extradited to Nigeria to be prosecuted.

The statement was from a Department of State Services (DSS) agent known as PWAAA, who testified further in Kanu’s trial. He said Ekpa should be extradited to Nigeria to answer for his alleged engagement in the support of Kanu in pro-Biafra agitation.

While cross-examined by Kanu’s lawyer, Kanu Agabi (SAN), the DSS operative agreed that he came to learn of all the other individuals backing Kanu solely through media reference and social media. And that he never knew about any other person being tried in relation to the agitation apart from Kanu.

The witness answered that he could not recollect Kanu ever speaking against corruption or youth unemployment or ever apologizing to the President and Igbo leaders, nor did he remember Kanu call IPOB a voluntary and non-violent organization. He recognized the killings that happened in the North and other parts of the country but could not relate them with the self-determination struggles and only affirmed the efforts made by the government in that regard.

Describing the background to Kanu’s arrest in Lagos in 2015, the DSS witness stated that the defendant was arrested in a hotel and that the recovered items belonged to Kanu. The woman who was arrested with him had no weapons or other evidence of any public disturbance. While not offensive in themselves, the witness argued that the items, when combined with their intended purpose, could in fact be seen as something else. He stated that his task did not include examining the items or confronting Kanu with others and confirmed that Kanu’s statement was taken in the absence of his lawyer.

A long list of items recovered from Kanu’s hotel room was admitted in evidence. These included electronic paraphernalia—laptops, modems, phones, microphones, and audio recorders—along with some personal effects, such as shoes, perfumes, wristwatches, and bank cards. Other items included documents marked “IPOB,” a Nigerian passport and a British passport bearing Kanu’s full name, and sundry accessories.
