UK-based Nigerian doctor caught selling jobs to foreigners

A UK-based Nigerian doctor, identified as Dr. Kelvin Alaneme has been caught on camera by the BBC in an undercover investigation, allegedly selling fake, non existent job offers to foreigners of other nationalities.

According to  BBC, Dr Alaneme, who is a psychiatrist had previously worked for the National Health Service, and is also the founder of a relocation agency, CareerEdu, based in Harlow, Essex.

The BBC stated that it commenced an undercover investigation following a series of online complaints about his relocation services.

The investigation revealed that CareerEdu parades itself as a “launchpad for global opportunities catering to young Africans” and claims to have 9,800 “happy clients” across different regions.

The reports further revealed that the UK-based Nigerian doctor attempted to recruit the BBC journalist who was part of the investigation, believing she had strong connections in the UK care sector.

He was quoted saying “Just get me care homes. I can make you a millionaire,”

The BBC report stated, “As a potential business partner, our journalist was then given unprecedented insight into how immigration scams by agents like Dr Alaneme actually work.

“Dr Alaneme said he would pay £2,000 ($2,600) for each care home vacancy she was able to procure and offered £500 ($650) commission on top.”

The UK-based Nigerian doctor allegedly intended to sell the vacancies to candidates in Nigeria looking to land jobs in the UK

A Nigerian man in his mid-30s identified as Praise recounted his experience with the UK- based Nigerian, stating that he paid Dr Alaneme over £10,000 ($13,000) for a job in the UK.

He said “I was told I was going to be working with a care company called Efficiency for Care, based in Clacton-on-Sea,”

“If I had known there was no job, I would not have come here,” he said. “At least, back home in Nigeria, if you go broke, I can find my sister or my parents and go and eat free food. It’s not the same here. You will go hungry.”
The victim stated that continuously messaged the company for several months however, the job never came to reality.

In a different recorded conversation, Dr. Alaneme outlined an even more elaborate scheme, involving forged sponsorship papers for fake employment opportunities.
Although the UK-based Nigerian Doctor tried to exonerate himself stating that all the mines transferred to him were truly sent to the employers, he further stated that his agency always been driven by the goal to provide global opportunities for young Nigerians.
Responding to BBC’s inquiries, the UK-based Nigerian stated that he provided a detailed account of events, supported by evidence and that his lawyers would be handling the matter legally.
