Ola Olukoyede, the chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), has revealed that the agency is presently looking into 18 incumbent governors for a variety of alleged financial offences.

This was disclosed by Olukoyede on Friday at a public awareness event in Lagos that addressed the naira’s abuse and misuse.

Due to constitutional restrictions, the anti-corruption chief claims that although the agency launches investigations while public officials are still in office, some actions are only carried out after they resign.

The EFCC boss stated that while the agency initiates investigations even while public officials are in office, certain actions are only taken once they vacate their positions due to constitutional limitations.

“We don’t wait until governors complete their tenure before we begin our work. Right now, the EFCC is actively investigating 18 sitting governors. Once their tenures are over, we will proceed accordingly,” he stated.

Olukoyede shared a parallel story about a former Nigerian governor who left the nation right after ceding control in order to avoid being arrested by the EFCC. He claimed that the former governor went to the UK and threw an extravagant birthday celebration in a hotel.

The governor in question stunned the hotel personnel by sprinkling British pounds in denominations of £10 and £50 during the celebration. The hotel manager was worried that the guest might be mentally unstable and called emergency authorities because of the strange behaviour.

“When the Metropolitan Police arrived, they prepared to detain him, even calling an ambulance, believing they were dealing with a psychiatric episode,” Olukoyede said.

He went on to say that two other Nigerian governors and the former governor’s close friends who had come to the UK for the occasion stepped in and explained the issue to the authorities.
