Former Governor Nasir El-Rufai has been detained in the custody of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission on Monday as the anti-graft agency grilled him over an alleged multibillion-naira money laundering allegation.

According to ThisDay, competent sources at the anti-corruption agency told revealed last night that El-Rufai “has a lot to answer for” and would most likely remain and spend some time with interrogators.

Sources familiar with the development revealed that the scale of interrogation may require a court ordered remand of the former governor to give the agency more time to build a water-tight case against him.

Recall that El-Rufai turned himself in to honour the invitation for interrogation yesterday following a letter of invitation to him by EFCC, which had been looking into his time as governor of Kaduna State.

In 2024, an ad hoc committee appointed by the Kaduna State House of Assembly suggested that Mr. El-Rufai be investigated for corruption.

He was charged by the MPs of embezzling N432 billion in public funds.

According to committee chairman Henry Zacharia, who delivered the report to the plenary in May 2024, the majority of the loans that Mr. El-Rufai’s administration received were put to other uses.

Mr Zacharia said most of the loans obtained and projects implemented did not follow “due process”.

According to the charge filed by M. E. Ernest on behalf of DSS, El-Rufai, 65, admitted during the broadcast that he and some associates unlawfully intercepted the private phone communications of the NSA.

The federal government also claimed that the alleged act amounted to serious breach of Nigeria’s cybercrime and communications laws and posed a threat to public safety and national security.

Meanwhile, Opposition leader, Atiku, yesterday, accused the federal government of persecuting El-Rufai.

According to Atiku, the former Kaduna state governor was currently coping with what he called needless diversions. He announced this in a post on his Facebook page in honour of the former governor’s birthday.
