“I’m exhausted, it feels like nothing will ever change” says corps member Raye as she permanently ends her advocacy for good governance due to threats and other challenges.
Lagos-based corps member Ushie Rita Uguamaye, popularly known as Raye, became well-known after criticizing the Tinubu-led administration over ongoing economic hardship. However, she has now announced her decision to step back from her advocacy against rising living costs in Nigeria.
In an Instagram post, Raye expressed feeling ashamed that she could not maintain the same level of energy she had at the beginning of her campaign. She attributed her withdrawal to persistent threats and a lack of collective support from Nigerians.
“I truly wanted my voice to make a difference. I hoped that something good would come out of it. I envisioned price regulations being put in place. I envisioned MTN and Airtel being held accountable for the outrageous price hikes,” she wrote.
Raye’s advocacy gained widespread attention when she spoke out against the continuous rise in the prices of essential goods and services, including steep hikes by telecommunications companies.
However, she revealed that despite her efforts, prices continue to soar.
“I went out to buy drinks again today, and once again, yesterday’s price is not today’s price. I’m exhausted, and it feels like nothing will ever change. People have advised me to manage until I can leave the country. But what if I want to stay here? What if I don’t want to leave?” she questioned.
Expressing a deep desire for national unity, Raye said: “I look forward to the day when Nigerians will stand together as one—regardless of tribe or what language we speak. That will be the day we finally experience the change we deserve.”
In the caption of her post, she acknowledged the love and support she received but expressed disappointment in how distractions weaken collective action.
“With all the support and love you’ve shown me, I hope you don’t feel disappointed, but seeing how easy it is to distract us and how disunited we are, I will be dropping this and going back to my normal life. I hope one day again, someone else will make a change,” she wrote.
