Lagos Only Teaches Yoruba? Igbos Threaten Legal Action!
The Lagos State Government was condemned by the Igbo Women Assembly (IWA), a pressure group, over the imposition of the teaching of Yoruba language only in public schools.
The group has vowed to take the governance under Babajide Sanwo-Olu to court over that decision. Nneka Chimezie, IWA national president, made this known at a press conference in Umuahia on Thursday.

IWA is associated with Ohanaeze Ndigbo, a leading Igbo socio-cultural organization. Chimezie said the group is worried about a law like this in a cosmopolitan state like Lagos.
According to her, it is not right to ask the government to know that other tribes are dwelling in Lagos.
“They should throw it open: Let Igbo, Hausa, and Yoruba be taught,” she said.

Ms Chimezie, however, commended the Yoruba for preserving their language.
She requested Igbo sons and daughters to join IWA in fighting to prevent the Igbo language from going into extinction.
She said the group would host an event to honour the Igbo Language on February 21, in observance of the United Nation’s Mother Tongue Day.

“This programme is going to take place in Umuahia, and many good sons and daughters of Igboland will be gathered together to discuss what to do for our language.”
“So we are coming together to talk about our language… rub minds to see how we can actually salvage our language from going into extinction.”
Governance of Charles Soludo is required to set up committees to check Agunechemba, a vigilance group, and put an end to pre-trial killings in Anambra.
“The way they arrest, they should hand them over for police custody to be properly investigated and prosecuted rather than to kill.

“Agunechemba is not supposed to arrest and kill, and there has already been too much blood-letting and killing of our youths in the South-East,” Chimezie said.
