Nigerian Woman, 54, Delivers 11 Babies After 3 Years of Pregnancy.
A 54-year-old Nigerian woman, Alake Latoyosi, has given birth to 11 babies after an extraordinary pregnancy that lasted over three years. The remarkable event took place in Cotonou, Benin Republic, where the mother delivered the children in two separate sets, a week apart.
On August 7, 2024, the first set of six babies arrived, followed by the second set of five on August 14, 2024. Tragically, two of the three girls in the group did not survive the delivery. The surviving babies include eight boys and one girl.
Yahaya Nafiu, the 56-year-old husband of Alake Latoyosi, revealed that the pregnancy had baffled medical professionals for years. Doctors were unable to determine the exact position of the pregnancy, making it impossible to perform a successful operation. Despite the complications, the babies were delivered safely with the help of local birth attendants.
Nafiu shared the immense financial burden he has faced, struggling to afford the care for his wife and their newborns. He described the birth as a miraculous event, especially given the initial difficulties and uncertainties surrounding the pregnancy. After the first set of six babies was born, Latoyosi experienced strange movements in her stomach, which led to the discovery of the second set of children, who were also safely delivered a week later.
This historic event has drawn attention in Ilorin, Nigeria, where Nafiu hails from. Abdulmumini Abdulmalik, the national president of the Ilorin Emirate Descendants Progressive Union (IEDPU), likened the event to a similar occurrence nearly a century ago, shortly after World War I, when a woman in Ilorin gave birth to ten babies at once. The location of that birth became known as Ita Goma, meaning the arena of decuplets.
Abdulmalik expressed his joy at the repeated history and called for financial support from the government and the people of Ilorin Emirate to assist Nafiu in caring for his large family. He extended his congratulations to the Emir of Ilorin, Alhaji (Dr) Ibrahim Sulu-Gambari, under whose reign this miraculous event took place.
