An explosion  has rocked the US embassy in Oslo, Norway, in the wee hours of Sunday, causing “minor material damage”, according to local police.

The explosion coincides with increased tension at US embassies and consulates worldwide as a result of the growing hostilities between Iran and the United States and Israel.

Iranian retaliation strikes have targeted several US diplomatic buildings in Gulf monarchies that house US troops, including those in Saudi Arabia and Kuwait.

The reason of the explosion was not immediately established, according to a statement released by Oslo police.

The blast on the US embassy was said to have occurred around 1am local time, affecting the entry to the compound’s consular section.

According to the police, resources were being used to look “for one or more potential perpetrators” as investigators examined the site.

“Police view such incidents in public spaces as very serious, and are investigating the case with substantial resources and high priority,” the statement said.

Michael Dellemyr, the police commander, informed local TV stations that they would “not comment on anything related to the type of damage, what it is that has exploded and similar details, beyond the fact that there has been an explosion”.

According to him, investigators were speaking with witnesses in order to learn more details about the incident.
