Renowned Nigerian human rights lawyer and Senior Advocate, Femi Falana (SAN), has urged the President Bola Tinubu-led administration to partner with other nations to mount pressure on United States President Donald Trump to end its ongoing military aggression in Iran.

Falana made the remarks on Thursday night during an interview with Politics Today on Channels Television.

Falana contended that in order to encourage respect for international law, Nigeria ought to resuscitate its multilateral diplomacy history.

He accused President Trump of disobeying international legal frameworks and United Nations resolutions in his criticism of his military involvement in Iran.

“President Trump has no regard and shows contempt for international law. Hence, he has pulled the United States out of about 66 resolutions of the United Nations. To him, the resolutions of the United Nations mean nothing,” Falana said.

He called on Nigeria to join forces with other nations to advocate for moderation in the increasing crisis, adopting a proactive diplomatic stance akin to the nation’s involvement during the Non-Aligned Movement.

Falana also underlined the necessity for Nigeria and other countries to push for diplomatic intervention by powerful nations like China and Russia, pointing out that both have sway over Iran.

“We need to persuade China and Russia to intervene because those are the two countries that Iran will listen to,” he added.

Beyond the international crisis, Falana urged Nigeria to strengthen its internal security architecture and reduce dependence on foreign powers for national stability.

“Nigeria must wake up. We must learn from Iran that unless you reorganise your own country, unless you equip your armed forces and your police force, there is no way an imperialist country like America will guarantee law and order in your country,” he said.

His comments coincide with the ongoing escalation of tensions between the United States, Israel, in the Middle East, which has raised concerns about security, humanitarian situations, and economic stability in the Middle East and abroad.

The United States and Israel launched combined attacks on Iranian territory on February 28, 2026, targeting major infrastructure and important leadership personalities. This marked the start of the war in Iran.

Ali Khamenei, the Islamic republic’s Supreme Leader, was killed in the strikes; his son, Mojtaba Khamenei, has taken over.

Meanwhile, the war has seen continued air raids on Iranian targets and retaliatory missile attacks by Iran against U.S. military facilities and targets in Israel and several Gulf countries.
