Sources privy to the development have revealed that President Bola Tinubu’s current trip to Saint Lucia is being used as a pretext for a private medical examination according to SaharaReporters.
The sources claimed that the Caribbean island’s involvement in this agreement is related to the influence of Gilbert Chagoury, President Tinubu’s close associate and Saint Lucia’s Honorary Consul to the Vatican.
It is also believed that Chagoury helped organise the visit in a similar way to how Tinubu was invited to witness Pope Leo XIV’s inauguration, which took place on Sunday, May 18, 2025, with a Mass in the Vatican’s St. Peter’s Square.
The government sources claim that the trip to Saint Lucia provided Tinubu’s medical staff with the opportunity to meet with him out of the public eye and away from Nigerian media.
“It’s a clever decoy,” one source said, “The only reason why President Tinubu is in St. Lucia is that it provides a good decoy to arrange for his doctors to meet him without the prying eyes of Nigerian journalists since Gilbert Chagouri is the Honorary Consul of St Lucia to the Vatican.”
“It was the same route they used to arrange his invitation to the inauguration of Pope Leo.
Critics contend that his administration’s pledges to enhance Nigeria’s healthcare system are contradicted by the frequent medical trips overseas.

However, the Presidency has clarified that Tinubu’s state visit to Saint Lucia is a part of efforts to develop closer ties between Nigeria and the Caribbean country as well as with other countries in the region. This is especially in accordance with Nigeria’s “Four D’s” foreign policy framework, which stands for Democracy, Development, Diaspora, and Demography.
