Former presidential candidate and human rights advocate Omoyele Sowore has been awarded N30 million in damages by the Federal High Court in Ikoyi, Lagos, against the Nigeria Police Force for falsely declaring the activist “wanted” in October 2025.

In his ruling on Friday, Justice Musa Kaakaki of the Federal High Court in Ikoyi, Lagos, ruled that CP Moshood Jimoh of the Lagos State Police Command had violated Sowore’s fundamental rights and committed an illegal act.

The activist revealed the development shortly after the court session, describing the ruling as a resounding blow to what he termed persistent police impunity and abuse of power.

“While the illegal IGP Kayode Egbetokun was busy running from courtroom to courtroom, desperately shopping for ex parte orders to cover monumental police illegalities, Justice Musa Kaakaki of the Federal High Court in Ikoyi, Lagos delivered a resounding blow this morning to their tyranny,” Sowore said on his social media accounts on Friday.

The activist added that the court condemned CP Moshood Jimoh’s actions without holding back.

Sowore said the ruling is a strong reminder to public servants who misuse their power.

“The judgment was clear, firm, and excruciatingly loud in its message: abuse of power has consequences,” he added.

Long-time activist and former presidential candidate Sowore has had several run-ins with security services due to his public criticism of governmental figures and activism.

However, Friday’s decision is a major legal win in his long-running legal battles with law enforcement.

Additionally, the activist appreciated his lawyer, Barrister Tope Temokun, for providing what he called “steadfast legal representation” during the process.
