Education remains one of the strongest tools for shaping the future of any nation, and in Nigeria, the need for sustained investment in learning resources continues to grow. In Lagos State, thousands of secondary school students recently received a boost that could significantly improve their academic experience.
In a large-scale educational support initiative, the Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila, facilitated the distribution of learning materials to about 8,000 students across several public schools in Surulere. The programme targeted students in 23 secondary schools within the local government area, providing essential academic tools aimed at strengthening classroom learning and easing the financial burden on families.
The initiative highlights the growing conversation around educational support systems in Nigeria, particularly in public schools, where many students still struggle with access to basic learning materials. By focusing on Surulere, a constituency Gbajabiamila represented for many years in the National Assembly, the programme reflects a continuing effort to support education at the grassroots level.

Large Scale Distribution Across 23 Secondary Schools
The educational outreach covered 23 public secondary schools across the Surulere Local Government Area of Lagos State. Beneficiary schools included Ajigbeda Secondary School in Iyun, Stadium High School in Iyun, Surulere Girls High School in Empire, Akintan Secondary School, Gbaja Girls Secondary School, and New Era Girls Secondary School, among others.
Thousands of items were distributed during the exercise, including textbooks, school bags, exercise books, and mathematical sets. These materials were carefully selected to address everyday academic needs faced by students in public secondary schools.
For many students, access to these resources can make a major difference in their ability to participate effectively in lessons and prepare for examinations. Teachers often point out that a lack of basic materials can slow down learning, especially in subjects that require practical exercises or regular assignments.
The distribution event also served as a platform for community leaders and education stakeholders to emphasise the importance of investing in young people. According to those involved in the programme, the initiative is part of a broader educational intervention that has been ongoing for years in Surulere.
Gbajabiamila, who currently serves as Chief of Staff to President Bola Tinubu, has historically maintained close ties with his constituency, even after leaving the House of Representatives, where he served for two decades.
Call For Collective Support For Nigeria’s Education Sector
During the programme, Gbajabiamila used the opportunity to urge individuals, organisations, and stakeholders to support government efforts aimed at improving Nigeria’s education system. He stressed that the government alone cannot solve the challenges facing the sector and that meaningful progress requires collaboration from the wider society.
Education, he noted, remains a cornerstone of sustainable development and a critical factor in national growth. By investing in the education of young people, communities are essentially investing in their future workforce, leadership, and economic stability.
Representing him at the event was Fouad Laguda, a member of the House of Representatives representing Surulere Federal Constituency I. Laguda explained that the initiative was designed to complement government efforts while encouraging students to pursue academic excellence.
According to the organisers, the programme also aims to relieve parents of some of the financial pressure associated with providing school supplies. In many households, particularly in urban communities with rising living costs, purchasing textbooks and other learning materials can be difficult.
Providing these materials directly to students not only helps families financially but also ensures that learners have equal access to the tools required for academic success.

Community Leaders Applaud The Initiative
The initiative attracted commendation from community leaders and education administrators within Surulere.
The Vice Chairman of Surulere Local Government, Muiz Dosunmu, praised the programme, describing it as a reflection of responsible leadership and commitment to community development. He encouraged the students to take their studies seriously and make good use of the materials provided.
According to him, educational interventions like this help motivate students to pursue their academic goals while strengthening confidence within public schools.
School administrators also welcomed the initiative, noting that such support directly improves teaching and learning outcomes. The Principal of Stadium Secondary School, Christiana Badejo, described the donation as an important investment in the future of the students and the country.
Educators often emphasise that consistent access to books and learning tools plays a significant role in improving academic performance. Without these materials, students may struggle to complete assignments, follow lessons properly, or prepare adequately for examinations.
By ensuring that thousands of students receive these resources at once, the programme could potentially influence academic performance across several schools within the local government area.
Students Express Gratitude And Renewed Motivation
For the students themselves, the distribution exercise was more than just a ceremonial event. Many expressed appreciation for the support and promised to use the materials to improve their academic performance.
Speaking on behalf of beneficiaries, a school prefect from Ajigbeda Secondary School, Aisha Jimoh, said the students felt fortunate to receive such assistance. She noted that the support would help them focus better on their studies and strive for excellence in their examinations.
Moments like this often create a strong sense of motivation among students. When young people see that leaders and members of their community are invested in their future, it can inspire them to work harder and pursue their educational ambitions with greater determination.
Beyond the immediate impact, the initiative also reinforces the broader message that education should remain a national priority. Nigeria continues to face numerous challenges within its education sector, including overcrowded classrooms, limited infrastructure, and shortages of learning resources in many public schools.

Support programmes such as this serve as reminders that community-driven solutions can play a meaningful role in addressing some of these challenges.
As Nigeria continues to pursue educational reforms and improved learning outcomes, interventions that directly support students remain critical. For the thousands of young learners in Surulere who received textbooks, bags, and other study materials, the gesture represents both practical support and encouragement for the academic journey ahead.
