In a statement released by the Director General, Abdullahi Baba Arah, the NSEMA stated that more than fifty residential houses and their residents were drowned and washed away by the rushing flood waves.

He added the agency is now conducting search and rescue operations to retrieve corpses and rescue survivors in response to the incident in coordination with the Mokwa LG Authority, local divers, and extremely courageous volunteers.

He stated that three people, including a woman and her two children, have been rescued thus far. They are being treated at Mokwa General Hospital for shock and wounds.

“NSEMA is in receipt of report of a deadly flood disaster that ravaged two communities.

“Twenty-one corpses have so far been recovered of those who sadly lost their lives in the incident while over 10 persons are still missing as search and rescue operation is still ongoing,” he further stated.

The development has shocked the National Hydroelectric Power Producing Areas Development Commission (N-HYPPADEC).

According to a statement from NHYPPADEC’s Head of Press and Public Affairs, Nura Tanko Wakili, initial indications show that the flood destroyed hundreds of properties and left a number of people—including children—unaccounted for.

The Commission also appealed to relevant stakeholders to act swiftly in providing relief and support to cushion the impact of the disaster on the affected communities.
