The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)’s governorship candidate in Sokoto State during the 2023 elections, Mallam Sa’idu Umar Ubandoma, has joined the All Progressives Congress (APC) ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Ubandoma was formally welcomed into the ruling party by APC leader in Sokoto State, Senator Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko, during a meeting at the senator’s residence in Asokoro, Abuja.
His defection was confirmed in a statement issued on Tuesday by Bashar Abubakar, Special Assistant on Media and Publicity to Senator Wamakko.
Explaining his decision to switch parties, Ubandoma said he was persuaded by the leadership qualities of Senator Wamakko and the developmental strides of Sokoto State Governor Ahmed Aliyu.
“I was inspired by the quality of leadership and political maturity demonstrated by Senator Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko, as well as the remarkable performance of Governor Ahmed Aliyu in delivering people-oriented projects across Sokoto State,” he said.
According to him, the achievements of the current administration convinced him that the APC remains committed to the state’s progress and development.
Reacting to the development, Senator Wamakko described Ubandoma’s defection as a significant gain for the APC, saying it reflected the increasing confidence political stakeholders have in the party’s leadership and governance.
He assured the former PDP flagbearer and his supporters of fairness, inclusion and equal opportunities within the APC, adding that the party remains open to individuals committed to fostering peace, unity and sustainable development in Sokoto State.
Ubandoma is a prominent politician who previously served as Commissioner for Finance and later Secretary to the Sokoto State Government under the administration of former Governor Aminu Waziri Tambuwal. He also flew the PDP flag in the 2023 governorship election.
His latest move comes despite reports that he defected to the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in March.
Ubandoma is a prominent political figure in Sokoto State who served as Commissioner for Finance and later Secretary to the State Government under former Governor Aminu Waziri Tambuwal. He was the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate in the 2023 election before leaving the party earlier this year to join the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
