Kano State Governor, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, has announced plans to return to the All Progressives Congress (APC) on Monday, January 26, 2026, barely days after his exit from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP).

The impending defection was confirmed in a statement released on Sunday by his spokesperson, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa.
According to the statement, Abba Kabir Yusuf said his decision was guided by current governance realities, the need for stronger national unity, and the pursuit of sustainable development.
The governor recalled that he was among the early members of the APC, having joined the party in 2014 when he secured its ticket for the Kano Central Senatorial race, a bid he later stepped down from in favour of Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso to preserve party harmony.
Reflecting on his political journey across different platforms, including his recent time in the NNPP, Yusuf noted that the APC remains a familiar and more organised platform capable of driving progressive governance.
He said rejoining the ruling party would strengthen cooperation between Kano State and the Federal Government.
“Rejoining the APC will further enhance collaboration with the Federal Government, accelerate infrastructural development, improve security coordination and enhance service delivery across Kano State,” the governor said.

He added that the move would also help
consolidate political stability and promote unity within the state.
The statement disclosed that Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf will formally register as a member of the APC in Kano on Monday, alongside 22 members of the Kano State House of Assembly, eight members of the House of Representatives, and the 44 local government chairmen in the state.
He is also expected to officially flag off the APC e-registration exercise in Kano State on the same day.
