In a statement personally signed by the governor, Sule said the death of the former Deputy Speaker of the Nasarawa State House of Assembly represents a profound loss to the state, the Eggon nation, and the nation as a whole.

The governor noted that Akwashiki was an accomplished public servant, a fearless legislator, and a devoted son of Eggon land, whose political career was characterized by humility, dedication, and an exceptional connection to the grassroots.

“Death has once again robbed Nasarawa State of an illustrious son. Senator Godiya Akwashiki was a leader who embodied humility, courage and an unwavering commitment to the welfare of his people,” Sule said.

He noted that the late senator’s political journey reflected a deep understanding of, and connection with, ordinary people, adding that his contributions to lawmaking and constituency development would remain a reference point for future leaders.

“The death of this distinguished senator is not only painful to his immediate family, the Eggon nation and the people of Nasarawa North, but also to the entire state and the Nigerian legislature,” the governor added.

“We will continue to cherish his enduring legacy of honour, leadership and steadfast service to our dear state.”

On behalf of the government and people of Nasarawa State, Governor Sule extended his condolences to the family of the deceased, the Aren Eggon and the Eggon Traditional Council, the National Assembly, and all those mourning the late senator.

Sule prayed for the repose of Akwashiki’s soul and for strength for all who have been affected by the loss.

It had reported that Senator Akwashiki, who represented Nasarawa North Senatorial District in the National Assembly, died on Wednesday, December 31, 2025, at the age of 52, in a hospital in India after a prolonged illness.

First elected to the Senate in 2019, he was re-elected for a second term, becoming the only senator from Nasarawa North to serve two consecutive terms since the creation of Nasarawa State in 1996.

Born on August 3, 1973, in Angba Iggah, Nasarawa Eggon Local Government Area, Akwashiki was widely known for his strong grassroots appeal and focus on constituency-driven projects.

He is survived by his wife, children and other family members.
