US President, Donald Trump has stepped back from a threatened wave of tariffs on European countries following what he described as a new framework agreement involving Greenland and the wider Arctic region.

Trump declared that the United States and NATO had “formed the framework of a future deal with respect to Greenland and, in fact, the entire Arctic Region” following his meeting with NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte on the fringes of the World Economic Forum in Davos.

On his Truth Social platform, he made the statement late on Wednesday, describing it as a strategic move related to trade, security, and geopolitical cooperation in the Arctic.

Reporters questioned Trump about if the framework supported his long-standing belief that the United States should possess Greenland, and he responded that it was “a little bit complex,” avoiding making any ownership claims. Meanwhile, Rutte downplayed rumours, claiming that their discussions had not touched on Denmark’s sovereignty over Greenland.

Following the statement, Trump declared that he would halt tariffs on eight European nations that had been previously announced and were set to go into effect in February.

Several European governments, including those of Denmark, Italy, and the Netherlands, applauded the decision, calling it a step in the right direction for economic stability and transatlantic relations. Before its abrupt reversal, the tariff threat had sparked worries about rising trade hostilities between Washington and Europe.

Earlier in Davos, Trump also sought to calm fears about his rhetoric on Greenland, saying he would not use force to take control of the territory. He stated that while the United States had the power to act, it would not resort to “excessive strength and force,” emphasizing diplomacy over confrontation.
