Former Minister of Transportation and former governor of Rivers State, Rotimi Amaechi, on Friday, was attacked while trying to enter his home town earlier today.

According to sources, the hoodlums attacked Amaechi’s convoy and also set  the office of the African Democratic Congress in Ubima community, Ikwerre Local Government Area of Rivers State on fire.

The former governor of Rivers State visited his village to e-register as an ADC member.

However, suspected thugs had already set up a barrier and turned back buses that were supposed to be carrying ADC members to the visit before Amaechi reached the neighbourhood on Friday at 12:15 p.m.

The thugs had earlier, on Thursday night, set ablaze the ward office of the ADC in Ubima, Amaechi’s hometown.

The miscreants allegedly used heavy weaponry to attack the neighbourhood in order to prevent the former governor’s arrival. They fired intermittently into the community and riddled Amaechi’s family home’s gate with bullets.

The armed thugs allegedly blocked the ADC leader’s convoy when he finally arrived to enter the village, but security personnel on his team confronted the assailants.

When the security operatives displayed superior firepower, the armed thugs fled into the bushes.

Amaechi urged calm in front of hundreds of party members and supporters who had come to see the e-registration process.

He expressed gratitude to the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps Commandant, the Commissioner of Police, and the Director of the Department of State Services for their prompt action during the assault on his convoy.

Speaking after touring the burned-out party headquarters, Amaechi claimed that the security services responded with professionalism.

He advised party members to refrain from using violence, pointing out that the police were in charge of identifying, apprehending, and prosecuting the perpetrators.

The former also urged the state governor to make efforts to provide adequate security across the state to avert anarchy.

He encouraged members of the party to commence massive mobilisation, noting that the party’s ultimate target was the presidency.

He said, “I have been a governor, and I know the consequences of not protecting the lives of people. The people will begin to protect their lives by themselves because they don’t want to die.

“But for now, everybody should calm down. Everybody should thank the Commissioner of Police. Everybody should thank the Director of SSS and the Commandant of NSCDC.

“Our role is to be calm, to be peaceful. We are marching to Aso Rock. What they are doing is a distraction. What they are doing will not put food on your table.
