Gunmen kidnap 3 INEC officials, others en route to Anambra ahead of governorship election”

Gunmen suspected to be kidnappers have reportedly abducted six passengers, including three staff of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), on their to Anambra State ahead of the November 8 governorship election.

According to sources, the three INEC employees—Chinenye Orji, Adamaka Anih, and Catherine Temaugee—were ambushed near Aloma, Kogi State, while en route from Abuja to Anambra.

In a recorded phone call that SaharaReporters was able to get, the driver of the Sienna minibus they were riding in claimed that the abductors gained control of the roadway, fired shots at the bus and broke the windscreen.

He claimed that everyone on the bus, including his wife was kidnapped, with the exception of himself and an old woman who was unable to walk.

The driver later recalled that when the abductors realised the old woman had mobility problems, they released both him and her.

The woman, who was also released in the vehicle, said, “We were in the same vehicle with them, going to Awka. The driver and myself were released. It happened a little after 3pm. We left the motor park at 9 am from Utako.

“We stayed briefly at Lokoja to eat. We took Anambra Comfort Line. The kidnappers have taken people custody, later they will contact their people. We went to Aloma Police Station. It happened a little after Aloma.”

According to reports, the three INEC employees were sent to Anambra to print voter registration forms and other election-related documents prior to the governorship election, according to sources who spoke with newsmen.

The kidnappers have not made any demands despite the fact that the incident has been reported to the police and is presently being investigated.
