Some unidentified hoodlums on Saturday disrupted the official opening of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) secretariat in Bakassi LGA of Cross River state, attacking party members and destroying property at the venue.
Shortly before the ceremony started, the attackers—who were purportedly political thugs—stormed the event.
In a video making rounds across social media, a man is heard saying no other party is wanted in the local government other than the All Progressives Congress (APC).

“We don’t want any party other than APC in Bakassi,” he said, after which he directed his accomplices to “scatter everywhere”.
“Everywhere must shut down,” he added.
The Cross River police command confirmed the incident, adding that hoodlums vandalised equipment and forced participants to flee the ADC secretariat.
The command’s spokesperson, Eitokpah Sunday, stated that although no arrests had been made yet, investigations were still in progress.

The incident occurs in the midst of heightened political activity surrounding ADC, which has recently drawn opposition leaders looking to form a coalition in front of the general election in 2027.
Recall that the ADC IS expected to formalise its structure at the party’s forthcoming national convention on April 14, where new national officers are to be elected.
Obi reacts to attack on ADC secretariat
Former presidential candidate Peter Obi, has condemned the disruption of the African Democratic Congress secretariat opening in Bakassi Local Government Area of Cross River State, describing the incident as “an attack on democracy itself.”

Obi claimed that the attack by alleged thugs was indicative of a concerning deterioration in the nation’s democratic ideals in a statement made public via X.
Obi also warned that the nation may turn violent as a result of the decline in leadership standards and the acceptance of political wrongdoing.
This incident comes barely two weeks after an ADC secretariat was similarly vandalizd and set ablaze in the hometown of former Rivers state governor, Rotimi Amaechi.
