A question asked by a police spokesperson, Aliyu Giwa—What would make you trust the police more?—has stirred a social media frenzy.

The question has raised a flood of reactions from Nigerians, with expressing deep frustrations and distrust toward the police institution.

The Force New Media Officer, Mr. Giwa, asked the question on X , requesting genuine feedback while asking Nigerians individuals for their opinions.

However, the responses that followed included genuine reform recommendations as well as sarcasm and open mockery.

Calls for real reform

While many users were very quick to dismiss the questions adding that the NPF can never be trusted, others called for actual reforms.

Many Nigerians noted serious structural concerns. Some also called for better training, improved welfare, and modern equipment.

X users further argued that an under-resourced and under-equipped force cannot deliver professional service.

Following the thread, the IG of Police, Olatunji Disu, on Friday, expressed commitment to put an end to impunity, especially by police officers, in Nigeria.

The Head, Complaint Response Unit, Anietie Okoro, said, “I have heard the cries of many Nigerians, and we are presently putting a lot together to ensure that this administration, moving forward, ends impunity in our nation.”

The IGP further expressed optimism that the engagements would strengthen the police’s “goal and our mandate and our desire for a more professional and a more accountable police in Nigeria and to serve with dignity and integrity.”
