IBB denies endorsing military rule, commitment to democracy

IBB denies endorsing military rule, affirms commitment to democracy.

Former Military President General Ibrahim Babangida has denied any association with a post on a parody X (formerly Twitter) account claiming he endorsed military rule over democratic governance. The post, which used Babangida’s image and the Nigerian coat of arms, falsely attributed statements to him, including an endorsement of military rule and a criticism of democracy.

In a statement from his media office, Babangida clarified that he does not support the account or the messages it publishes. He reaffirmed his commitment to democracy, stating that Nigeria’s democracy is resilient and must be safeguarded. Babangida emphasized that the solution to the nation’s challenges is more democracy, not less, and praised the military’s support for civilian rule since 1999.

The statement urged the public and media to disregard any posts from the parody account and called for caution in sharing unverified information attributed to Babangida on social media.
